Finally Updated

For the last two weeks, I have been getting prompts on my desktop PC to install Windows updates. Every time I tried, it was unsuccessful. Running virus scans never resolved the problem.

Before I went to bed last night, I ran another scan. When I awoke this morning, I had another prompt for the updates. It was finally successful.

The updates took over one hour. I'm glad it finally worked. I have no idea what caused the problem.

New For 2019

Most charities raise money throughout the year. It often keeps their administrative costs high.
I received my first 2019 calendar in the mail today. It was only a matter of time. I usually get at least a dozen before it's over.
There are some charities I never heard of, but they want money from me.
There is no way I can ever stop this. At least it keeps people employed.

No Train Between

It is so bizarre to think that there is no rail connection between North and South Stations in Boston. It has been like that forever.
Travelers should be able to take Amtrak from Florida to Maine, but the ride is disrupted in Boston for a matter of two miles. It causes so much inconvenience.
It might take twenty years from today to build a connection between the stations if they ever really do it.

They Throw It On The Grill

People in different parts of the world eat things that we would never think of consuming. What is normal there, is unthinkable here.
A friend of mine was traveling in Cambodia and Thailand. He posted a picture of himself eating grilled rat by a roadside cafe.
I can't imagine eating it, but that is normal for people there.

Won't Always Be The Worst House

In real estate, they always say the best investment is the worst house in a nice neighborhood.
I have been watching the renovations of a house that is a big eyesore. It's for sale and already under agreement.
The contractor is doing some awesome work bringing the house back. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. I have no doubt it will look beautiful.

Climbing With A Little Help

People try to set some of the strangest world records. I think many of them get there with the help of others.
A man from Australia just became the fastest to climb the highest mountains in each of the seven continents, achieving his goal in 117 days.
While I greatly admire his determination to get this record, I can only imagine the assistance he had with the logistics along the way.

Doing It Twice

The writing style in newspapers never ceases to amaze me. They use contractions I never heard of. They should be at a higher standard, but they are not.
One of the bigger puzzles is why articles are repeated in the paper in the same edition. It happens almost every day in my local one.
Are they just trying to take up space because they didn't sell advertisement? There must be something they could print other than repeating themselves.

Foaming At The Pumps

The news had a story of a gas station that accidentally had a discharge of its fire suppression system.
It certainly covered everything with a thick layer of foam, including the cars filling up.
I wonder how long the customers were delayed there.

Another Building Issue

You can always count on a recently built public building to have problems. There seems to be few exceptions.
The local police station built twenty years ago had issues with a leaking roof and windows. Costly repairs were done at the expense of the city.
Last year, solar panels were installed on the roof. You could bet money that it would cause a problem and it did with further leaks.
It will cost almost $100,000 to fix. What will be the next issue? It never ends.

The Ultimate One-Way Ticket

The Boston Globe had a very interesting story about some of the finalists to travel to Mars in 2032.
It remains to be seen if the $6 billion private endeavor to colonize the planet ever gets off the ground.
Several of the candidates were interviewed about their feelings of the one-way trip with no return back to their families.
In some cases, it has caused issues with marriages and children because they will never see each other again.
The 18 month journey is filled with peril. If they ever get there, it will be the story of the century.

The Slow Reader

I have always been a very slow reader. If I try to go faster, I lose my comprehension.

It has been like that my entire life. I compensated for it in school by putting in so much additional effort to get my work done. Whenever I read anything, it seems to take forever.

There was an example on Facebook of reading rates. The average reading speed was 300 words per minutes. I struggled greatly with that. They didn't have an example of a slower speed.

Whenever I read, I say every word in my head. I cannot glance at the page and comprehend much.

All of this never impacted my desire to read or passion for learning.

Pepsi At The Beach

Strange things happen in the news. Last night, I saw a story of a Pepsi delivery truck that was stuck in sand on the beach.
How did the truck get there? The driver claims he took a wrong turn. That doesn't make any sense. The truck was removed.
Nobody was hurt and no charges were filed against the driver. Very strange.

Lava Times

The tourism industry in Hawaii is taking a beating in light of the volcanic eruption there. The latest incident is starting to effect plane flights.
You can't blame people for changing their plans. Nobody wants to get stuck there or have plans changed once they arrive.
People who live near are finding out that their home owner's insurance doesn't cover damage. I don't know why anyone would choose to live near an active volcano.

Slowest Upload
I attempted to upload a 1GB video to youtube using my slow internet connection. What a nightmare it became. It totally shut my system down as far as doing anything else. I will try later.

Boston Slow Ride

There is never a good time to drive into Boston or depart from the city.
I thought 6am would be good, but everyone else had the same idea. It was a long slow ride to get there.
I left Boston around 4pm and had a similar issue, although it was a bit less.
How do people put up with this every day of their work life? I don't mind a long drive as long as I keep moving

Don't Give Them Rides.

People make bad decisions all the time. Some have big repercussions while others are harmless.

The news had a story of a driver who came across a deer which had been struck by a motor vehicle. He carefully placed it in the backseat of his car and brought it to an animal hospital.

The facility had to turn him away because they were not allowed to treat wildlife. He then went to a place that could handle it.

All was well with the deer, but the rescuer dodged a major disaster because the animal could have freaked out in the car and caused an accident.

No harm was done either way, but he lucked out.

You Can Bet On That

The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of on-line sports betting. This is great news for gamblers, but it has not been without controversy.
I'm all in favor of the state getting a cut of the revenue once regulations have been established. It will become another "voluntary tax" on those who participate.

Once More With Heat

After some amazing weather this week, we had a cool raw day today with a little drizzle.
I always thought that I would turn the heat on at least one more time. It happened tonight to take the chill out of the air.

Red Ears

The weather was perfect today for playing nine holes of golf with a friend. The temperature was right and the sky had a brilliant shade of blue.
I thought I applied sunblock properly on my face, but I was wrong. My ears got very red after two hours of sun.
From this point forward, I need to do a better job putting sunblock on my ears.

Those Upload Issues

I thought it would be a lot easier to upload one of my comedy DVD's to my Youtube channel. It didn't end well. I must be doing something wrong.
I only uploaded a few videos in the past. Maybe it would be easier with an iphone at this stage of the game.

It was a perfect spring day today. It won't get much better than this. The weather was perfect for playing golf with friends.

Just Dump It

Illegal dumping is a problem in every city and town across America. There are always stories in the news of people who just don't care what they do. They will dump things anywhere
New York City certainly has its issues. Someone decided to take it to another level by dumping a 22 foot boat on a street in the Bronx. The city had to use its resources to haul it away.
People who do this are selfish. They feel that everyone should share in their problem. They refuse to take responsibility.

It Spares Nothing

We are witnessing a huge natural disaster on the big island of Hawaii as the Kilauea volcano continues to erupt and spew lava.
There seems to be no end to the destruction as the lava consumes everything in its path. A sub-division of expensive homes is directly in the way of exploding rocks.
There is nothing anyone can do to stop this. People need to evacuate and stay out of the way. The final toll of destruction remains to be seen.

Must Leave It Running

There was a story on the 11pm news of a woman who had her dog disappear when her car was stolen. I really hope she gets it back.
She left her car running while going into a convenience store. That was such a bad idea. Why do people do that?
On the other hand, you can't leave a pet in a vehicle these days in any type of weather.

Where Are The Helmets?

When I was at UMass, I use to watch the lacrosse team practice and play games. Everyone wore a helmet with a cage in front of their face.

Whenever I see pictures of girls playing high school lacrosse, nobody is wearing a helmet. They just have goggles and a mouth piece.

When did this change? Are the rules different? I have no idea. It looks so dangerous to play without protection. There must be a lot of facial injuries.

A Few Will Select From Many

Many in Congress end up with limited opposition when they run for re-election. Once a member retires, candidates come out of everywhere to give it a shot.
My local Congressional district is a great example. The seat is open now that the sitting member is retiring.
Thirteen candidates have qualified for the Democratic primary. Very few will have any type of chance to make it to the final election.
To make matters worse, a limited amount of voters will even bother to vote in the primary.

Too Many Aircraft Down

The US Military has too many training accidents involving aircraft. They are fatal in many instances.
The latest involved an Air National Guard C-130 cargo transport that was on its last flight to be retired in Arizona. It crashed as soon as it took off the ground, killing all nine aboard.
There will be an investigation and a cause will be found, but it won't be the last fatal crash. It's only a matter of time before tragedy strikes again. It never ends.

Heat On and Off

It was 92 degrees today when I went out for a run. It really felt like summer out there. Thunder storms are in the forecast for tomorrow.
I finally shut my heat off today until autumn. There will always be a day in late May or June that is cold and raw. Inevitably, I turn the heat back on for a few hours.

Teaching Nothing

Local school systems are trying to figure a way to make up all the days lost to the winter storms. Many will be going to the end of June.

For the most part, not much learning is done in June. One community is trying sessions on Saturday. Their high school of 1,400 had a 68% attendance rate.

The day was a waste. Students were greeted by a DJ and had ice cream sandwiches at lunch. Not much got done, but the day counted.
