Not Two Million

The media keeps saying that there will be two million people in Times Square tonight to celebrate the start of 2019.

One so-called expert on estimating crowd sizes insists that this is all nonsense. He said it would be more like 100,000 because that many people could not fit into the area.

I don't know what the real figure will be, but it won't be two million. Inflating crowd sizes is nothing new.

Same Comments, Different Year

Every year at this time, people post the same comments on Facebook. They are so glad to see the year end and welcome a fresh start.

In the ten years I've been on Facebook, these comments show up annually.

Some people seem to think that a new year will bring an automatic improvement in their life. It doesn't work that way.

Bridge Repairs Take Long

The local bridge deck repair had a completion date by the end of this week. That will never happen as this project crawls along during the holiday season.

It doesn't look like much work has been done. When will it be completed? Nobody really knows the answer.

No Place For Cars

There was quite a story on the news tonight about a car that drove into a house in a quiet neighborhood.

The crash caused a great deal of damage to the front of the place. Nobody was hurt, but it could have been much worse.

It would be so easy for a car to crash into many homes, especially along a busy street. You never think it will happen, but it does on rare occasions.

No News Today

There are many great holiday traditions. My local newspaper decided to continue their own by not publishing on December 25th.

It's nice that they give everyone the day off, but printed papers are at the point where they might eventually give all of their employees a permanent vacation.

Many are on the verge of extinction. I hope they are all here next year.

Rodents Are There

The natural gas explosion in the Merrimack Valley caused so much heartache for those effected. It took more time than expected to restore service to all the homes and businesses.

One of the unfortunate impacts was the infestation in some places from rats and mice. With all the digging that was done, it appears they were disturbed and are now in too many places.

Residents are left to deal with this which is never easy.

The Deadly Wave

The tsunami that struck Indonesia is a horrible tragedy. The death toll has surpassed 200.

People living along the coast never had a chance. It happened so fast after the eruption of an underwater volcano off the coast.

They said it would be done by the end of next week.

It won't happen,

Winter Enters For 2019

Today was the first day of winter. It was 63 degrees with a lot of rain at times.

This is not normal for December, but at least it wasn't snow.

Interupting Their Ddinner

There was a smashed pumpkin on a street that I saw over the last few days while I ran.

Yesterday, there was a squirrel feasting on the remains until I approached. It then took off and ran up a tree.

After I passed a safe distance, I looked back and saw them back at their  feast. There was plenty of it to share with others.

Itching For Winter

It's a few more days until the start of winter, but the skin on my legs is very dry and itchy.

This is something that happens every year. Various skin creams help as long I use them on a consistent basis.

Whenever I let up, it gets bad. This will last until spring.

No School Lunch For Them

There was a story in the news about a school system that wants to prohibit parents from going to their kids school and having lunch with them.

I didn't think this happened anywhere. Parents should step away once the school bell rings. They need to let their children grow and experience life without their constant intervention.

Just Walk Onto The Train

It seems so wrong that the New York City transit system lost $215 million last year to fare evaders.

It's a problem that has been around forever. Good luck fighting that battle.

Autumn Is Done

It's the last week of autumn. It all ends on Friday when winter takes over.

Time is passing so quickly. I need to run more miles than I do.

Playing Bridge At Night

The state began emergency repairs on a very heavily traveled local bridge. To minimize traffic impact, the work will be done at night. This sounds like a good idea.

It's a tough time of year to be doing this with the holidays and unpredictable weather.

They said it would take two weeks. That will get it done before the end of 2018.

Lets see if that happens

No Bag Time

Boston will ban the use of plastic bags today in retail stores. It will inconvenience many people.

Offering recycled paper bags is a great option, but it won't happen everywhere.

It will take time to see how this works.

Trees Removed

Nobody likes to see trees cut down, but there are times to think about doing it.

I drove by the local controversial tree cut to see how it looked. They cut down a lot of trees, but did something they needed to do.

I have run and snowshoed on the trail paths. The growth has constricted it so much. It's so overgrown. No sunlight ever gets in.

This stuff always grows back.

The Do It For You Tree

There seems to be an app or service provided for almost anything.

People now have the option of having a Christmas tree delivered to their home and set up. They can also have it taken down and removed.

This seems like a good idea for people with a busy lifestyle, but something is missing here.

Bad Tree Ideas

The news had a story of people making bad decisions when it comes to transporting Christmas trees.

Too many drivers are not securing them properly to the roof of their vehicle. This presents a potential flying projectile on the roadway.

One selfish person decided to bring one aboard a subway car in Boston, in spite of the train being crowded.

Cigarettes and Bags

I don't think it's the role of local government to pass  ordinances changing the age to buy cigarettes or prohibiting the use of plastic bags. So much of this is grandstanding by politicians.

There is so much hysteria of 18 year kids buying cigarettes or alcohol.

If you can enlist in the military and die for your country, you should be able to smoke and drink legally.

Trying to legislate the use of plastics bags on a local level is a great example of the Nanny State.

Don't Park It In The City

The New York Post had an interesting story of a city resident bringing a lawsuit against their on-site parking garage.

He claims his $347,000 Ferrari suffered door and side mirror damage while the car was operated by garage workers.

Repairs escalated to the tune of $19,500. It also impacted the value of the resale according to the suit.

No matter what, I don't think it's a good idea to drive and park a car like that in Manhattan. It's just asking for a problem.

You roll the dice driving there or in town.

Not Bacon Time

I never eat bacon. It's not the healthiest food out there, but some people can never get enough of it.

Ohio State University has now installed a vending machine that will dispense a few strips upon payment.

Food from a vending machine never tastes good. I can't imagine their bacon.

Pumping & Vaping

So many younger people vape. I have no issue with that, but I thought it was a bad idea for a guy to do it next to me while pumping gasoline into your car.

You can never convince people to do certain things.

Snow Easy Budget

People who are involved in the preparation of snow removal budgets can never really feel they got it right.

Cities and towns have already spent money and it's not even winter.

Nobody can really predict the snowfall. A bad rain storm could be a blizzard if it was colder.

Trying To Travel Safe

Whenever we hear of a fatal head-on car crash, there are always extenuating circumstances. The fact that it occurred during daylight hours makes it even worse.

A driver traveling south on Rt 495 crossed the media and struck a car heading north. Both drivers were killed.

Was there a medical issue involved? The innocent person traveling north probably never had a chance to get out of the way.

No More Nips

Liquor stores in Chelsea, Mass will no longer be able to sell nips. Those little bottles of alcohol are being blamed for a number of quality of life issues in the community.

Some feel that it is heavy-handed in light of the economic issues and demographics of the population.

Will this make life better for the residents? It remains to be seen.

They Are Out There

I have a lot of respect for the crews who are out at highway projects. The timing is never good, but they need to be there.

There is so much infrastructure work in America that could be done. It takes forever to get a project approved.

Street Paint

It will be real interesting to see how long the white paint lasts on the street for a recent project.

It looks really nice right now, but what will it look like six months from now.
