End of February 2019

It's the last hour of the last day in February. The weather has been so cold and windy for several days.

We had four inches of snow this morning. The weekend might have more snow issues.

Tomorrow is March and it's only three weeks until spring.

Don't Forget Inflation

We can never go back in time. It's all about moving forward. It doesn't do any good to look at consumer prices from years past.

People often post on social media about the cost of things from another era. That was the price then, but inflation has always been around.

Wages and prices go up. The key is whether you have the same buying power.

The Wind of 2019

The wind was very severe the last two days. Many trees and branches  came down.

It's a natural thing for trees to experience wind damage, but you hate to see it impact homes and cars.

The news had some pretty tough stories of people being effected. At least nobody was killed so far.

Let The People Decide

The Boston City Council voted to initiate a petition to the Massachusetts State Legislature to extend their terms from two years to four.

The Secretary of State remarked that the voters of Boston should make the decision.

The voters are the ones to determine how long they want their elected officials to serve. It varies from cities and towns, but it's up to the people.

Plastic Supply

I always recycled my plastic bags or used them for trash. Now that my food market doesn't use plastic, I no longer have a stock on hand.

I could use the paper bags for my trash, but it's not the same. I will continue to save plastic bags from smaller stores and use them as needed.

Whenever I shop in New Hampshire, it's back to plastic.

Too Wide and Too Narrow

Trucks with wide loads pose a threat no matter where they travel.

I encountered one today causing a huge traffic backup on the curvy and hilly road that is Rt 202 out in western Mass.

At one point, I counted twelve cars ahead of me and at least ten in the rear. It was getting a bit dangerous as nobody could pass this vehicle.

After about ten minutes, he pulled over and let everyone pass him. He was transporting a very big excavator on a narrow and hilly road.

Winter Parking

It's never a big deal with winter parking unless there is a big snow fall.

We never know when snow happens.

Weather or Not

We have a few inches of snow on the ground. It could all be gone in the next few days with the predicted rain storms. Who knows?

Nobody can get it right 100% of the time with the weather. All you can ever do is get as much information as possible.

Bright Times

My landlord replaced two overhead lighting fixtures in my apartment with LED's.

They are basically throwaway lights after 15 years. I find it hard to believe that they will last as long as advertised.

It will be great if I never replace another light bulb.

How To Fall

The New York Post had an interesting article about how to properly fall if you slip on ice.

It was helpful, but it can happen too fast to react.

I try to be so careful around it. The worst thing is black ice. It can be hard to spot at times.

Speed Doesn't Help

I have never been on a snowmobile and have no plans to ever take a ride.

This was a bad weekend for the sport as drivers were involved in numerous accidents, including two fatal ones.

Speed seems to be a factor in most cases. It's amazing to see how fast they go.

At some point, we will hear of one falling into a lake after breaking through the ice.

The Terrible 2's

The weather people owned the 11pm news tonight because of the pending snow.

It looks like we will either have 1-3 or 3-6 inches. They can never be wrong.

So many parents are wondering about tomorrow. They need to make plans.

Nobody really knows how much snow we will get.

Two inches of snow can make a big difference.

Nowhere Train

I believe in high speed trains. I'm not sure if I'll ever see it in my lifetime. I can't imagine having one between Boston, NYC and DC. The cost would be astronomical and take forever to build.

Back in 2008, California voters voted to spend $10 billion as their share for a high speed train between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The 520 mile line was meant to be finished by 2029 at a cost of $32 billion. The latest schedule is for 2033 and $77 billion.

Will it ever get done? There is only so much money you can spend on these projects.

No Longer George's Day

Presidents Day is no longer the celebration of Washington's Birthday. That happened a long time ago. Now it's a big time for car sales.

They say to come in before deals expire. It implies that you will never never get a deal again.

Sales need to happen. You can always make a deal.

Ready To Rip

Many cities and towns have banned the use of plastic bags. After years of using them, we are back to paper.

The bags are awkward to carry. You can handle a lot more with a bunch of plastic ones. The bags rip easily.

Some of the employees at the food market could do a better job packing them.

Forming New

I finally got a copy of the new IRS Form 1040 and instruction booklet. There are so many changes in the way Americans will file their tax returns.

Is it easier for taxpayers? They eliminated Forms 1040A and EZ and created several schedules.

There is nothing really easy when it comes to taxes, especially for those who need to pay additional money by April 15th.

Paying For The Garage

UMass Boston recently rebuilt their parking garage for a cost of $69 million. Users were outraged when the daily fee of $6 was increased to $15.

This has a huge economic impact on students and staff. If there had to be an increase, it could have been for a lot less.

It sounds like the users are financing the cost of the garage.

The Losing Wheel

I always thought it was a bad idea to have Boston bid for the Summer Olympics. The proposal to have a very tall Ferris Wheel on the Boston waterfront doesn't make any sense.

They should read the story of trying to build a larger one on Staten Island. It never worked out and lost so much money.

From Gas To Teeth

I'm a big advocate of giving buildings a new purpose when their time comes. You never want to lose great architecture.

I saw an old gas station today that is now a dental office. It looked really nice.

I'm sure there was additional cost to remove the gasoline tanks and  contaminated soil.

Free For All

The MBTA certainly has its share of problems, especially providing timely service to riders. It loses money and could not operate without a subsidy from the state.

Whatever fare increase is finally implemented will not solve the financial problems of the system.

A Boston city councilor has proposed to make ridership free for everyone. Nobody will need to pay.

The revenue generated from fares will now need to be covered by the state. That cost will be the responsibility of taxpayers.

Don't Park There

Some people don't care where they park. It doesn't matter to them.

Are they just inconsiderate and selfish or do they not know the rules of the road?

People park too close to intersections. In my neighborhood, they cause blind corners when turning onto to streets.

I saw someone park right in front of a fire hydrant across the street from where I live. It didn't matter to them.

Why do people do that?

When I was 22, I parked at a meter in Boston that was a tow zone after 4pm. I neglected to look at a sign that stated the hours. It was my fault.

I learned the lesson of a lifetime. I only park where you can legally do it with no doubt.

Not 30 Minutes

Advertisers on the radio, television  and other forms of media always under estimate the distance or time to get to a destination.

A local ski area continues to say that they are 30 minutes from Boston. It's a huge stretch to say that.

The only way you could travel in 30 minutes would be to have no traffic on the road.

It doesn't matter when you travel, there is always traffic out there.

Too Many Riders

It got up to 65 degrees today, but will be cold again tomorrow. The New England Patriots duck boat parade had perfect conditions. Everyone seem to have a good time.

It was a nightmare for people using public transportation to get home. Stations had very long lines. The system isn't equipped to handle that many riders.

People eventually got home.

Never Offensive

I never saw one minute of the Super Bowl half-time show and wasn't familiar with some of the acts.

The TV ratings were the lowest in the last ten years. Fans want to see points. They get bored with defensive contests.

Boston Parking

I think you can waste a lot of time trying to find a parking spot.

So many changes are happening in Boston. Parking a car for a reasonable rate can be a challenge.

No Colors or Symbols

A local private school isn't allowing three boys to wear the colors of the New England Patriots in their hair as part of the Super Bowl hype this weekend.

They were sent home with the stipulation that they can return when they get rid of the colors.

This might seem heavy-handed, but he school has a policy against displaying any type of colors and symbols in the hair of students.

Where do you draw the line? What is considered offensive? No matter what, not everyone will be pleased.
