Spring 2019 Is Here
11:53 pm edt
The first day of spring is in its final minutes. The season
has so much potential.
we have the great spring that everyone wants?
People always complain about the associated bad weather. Who knows how this will transition into

They Want New Ones
6:04 pm edt
Many communities are suddenly
declaring schools built in the 1950's and 60's as obsolete.
A local regional school district wants to replace their junior and senior high schools which were
built in 1967 and 1956 for a total cost of $146.3 million.
The two schools located on the same campus would become a three storey building for grades 7-12.
There doesn't seem to be any discussion about fixing the
older buildings. People want new schools for their kids.

Big File Loss
1:57 pm edt
I was never involved in MySpace.
It had a brief run before losing out in popularity to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
It has lost considerable value in recent years while being
sold several times. It became a hosting site for musicians and their music.
Today they announced that a server problem caused the loss of all files from 2003-2015. This included
50 million songs from 14 million artists.
Nobody really knows what the next step is, but any recovery of the lost material is very doubtful.

11:32 pm edt
I was surprised to see such
a blatant reporting error in a story on the Boston 11pm news tonight.
was a nice bit on a 84 year old woman who competes in track and field events. They were talking about her pole vaulting, but
showed video of high jumping with a graphic indicating a vault.
The woman was amazing. It's too bad they couldn't get the story right.

Old Pipes Break
7:10 pm edt
There are so many old water and sewer pipes under our streets.
It's a constant challenge to address the problems when they break.
The other day a two foot section of a 16 inch water main ruptured and created a major flood in the
Back Bay of Boston.
pipe had been there since 1875.

It Starts With The Third Floor
5:34 pm edt
Malls are closing on a regular basis all across America.
There are too many retail stores and not enough sales to keep them all viable.
The CambridgeSide Galleria is closing its top floor and converting the stores to office rental. With
its close proximity to Kendall Square, there is a great need for office space.
This is probaly the first step to the eventual closing of the mall. It has struggled for years.

The End of Winter 2019 Is Near
11:30 pm edt
As we head into St Patrick's
Day weekend, the end of winter is before us. By this time next week, it will be over.
Spring will certainly have its issues. Weather is always a factor and can influence plans.
Only a fool would think that we could never get
another bit of snow again. I've seen some pretty crazy weather over the years.

Feeding The Sharks
5:47 pm edt
Shark sightings off the coast
of Cape Cod were a light story in recent years until there was a fatal attack last summer.
It was inevitable because of the large seal population which
provided an endless food supply.
are taking a stronger stance in trying to educate the public about the dangers in the water. Some people think they can peacefully
coexist with the sharks.
it happen again? Nobody ever expected a fatal attack.

Not In Hot Water
8:48 pm edt
My apartment building lost
hot water last night when one of the heaters failed. My landlord wasn't able to fix it today, so we will wait until tomorrow.
I showered at my gym today. The cold water in my bathroom
was just too much.
have been having trouble with hot water for the past month. It looks like it finally came to a head today.

I think people keep food for
too long. Some do it out of necessity. Healthy eating is a challenge, but just having enough to eat can be a bigger one.
Many people have no problem preparing their Monday through
Friday meals ahead of time. Kids school lunches are done for the week.
Some think cold cuts last forever.

The Drive To Nowhere
2:10 pm edt
When I was younger, kids couldn't wait until they became
old enough to drive.
the last few decades, there has been a consistent trend for younger people not getting their license.
Back in 1983, 87.3% had one by the time they were 19. In
2014, that figure dropped to 69%.
What is the cause of this? We see it in other age groups too. Trends like this certainly impact car sales
among other things.

Taken For A Ride
4:41 pm est
Uber and Lyft dominate the
ride sharing market, but also lose a ton of money.
Lyft will be raising cash through an IPO. Documents released show the company lost $911 million in
2018. Uber also had huge loses.
what point will these companies be profitable? Buying stock like this is a risk for any investor. Nobody likes to lose their

A Pile of Bricks
4:44 pm est
Deteriorating buildings are
a blight on a neighborhood and can lower the value of surrounding properties.
I'm a big supporter of historic preservation, but some have no connection to it.
A local home has been an eyesore for decades. Nothing was
ever done to address the problem. The house was beyond repair and had also been used for car repairs.
When I drove by today, the structure was a pile of rubble.
I have no doubt that a duplex will rise from the site, but the soil on the lot is probably contaminated to some extent from
the years of automotive fluids.

Age of Adults
2:55 pm est
There is a proposal to lower
the voting age to 16. What is the proper age for adult things?
The age limits on buying alcohol and tobacco products don't make any sense if they lower the voting
You can join the
military at 18, but can't buy a smoke or a drink.
When are kids considered adults?
They Drive Too Fast
11:11 pm est
It's hard to believe that Maine had it's 9th snowmobile
death of the season. That is far too many, but what can we really do about it?
People drive their machines much too fast. They want to do it. It's part of the whole experience
of being out there.
