The End of 2017

There are now only six hours left to 2017. The year will be relegated to history. So much happened this year.
Many people think that the new year will allow them to start with a clean slate. I think they are only kidding themselves.
The new year holds so much promise, but it's just an extension of the present.

Trillion To Build

I really hope the trillion dollar infrastructure program gets approved by Congress. There are so many worthy projects.
How do we spend the money? There is so much potential for waste and fraud with any government contract. It costs extra money in the end for any project
The various 100 year old subway tunnels under the Hudson and East Rivers in NYC could cost over $20 billion to address and still not get the job done under budget.
Let's spend the money and make it good for another hundred years.

Charging To Save

We always think that the services provided by police and fire departments are free. Their salaries are paid by taxes. That is not the case in Seabrook, NH.
They will now be charging $500 when the "jaws of life" are used to rescue someone. This seems a bit outrageous. Are people suppose to say no when they hear the cost?
Whenever this tool is used, it's usually a pretty dire situation. The town should be embarrassed by trying to squeeze money from people.

Name That School

A nearby community is asking its citizens for input in naming a new school. They need to fill out a form and say why their name should be used.
This is never a good idea because not everyone will be happy in the end. If you name it after a person, there will be others who could make a strong case for their individual.
It's getting to the point where it's easier to come up with a generic name.

Winter 2018 On Deck

It will be very cold for the next several days. There is snow on the ground that looks like it's here to stay.
All it takes is one day with warm temperatures or rain to wash it all away.
Nobody can ever predict how this winter will be.

Smarter Than The Customer

Smart phones are often smarter than their users. There are so many thinks to know. Their capabilities are limitless.
I never knew how easy it is to do live video messaging or to edit a video. All it takes is for someone to show you.

They Got Their Wish

We always hear about having a white Christmas. We got one today with at least four inches of snow. It will be cold and windy throughout the day. The driving conditions will not be very good.

It's winter in New England. The weather can be very unpredictable. It doesn't matter what day it is.

The Big Puzzle

I have a 500 piece puzzle of the New York Subway map which I purchased last year. I have never done one of these.

Some people are able to do these in no time. I plan to start doing it. How long will it take?

Why Not 20

A woman in Israel just gave birth to her 19th child. Why would anyone have that many kids?
It must be a tremendous financial burden to have that many. She seems to be very healthy.
I wonder if they will try for one more to make it an even 20.

Cash Only For Them

The Salvation Army claims that donations are down from last year. They blame it on the fact that most shoppers carry a limited amount of cash on them and the agency can't accept credit cards.

I think they have a valid point. Most people want to put change or a dollar bill in the kettle. They can't break a large bill so they just keep walking. It has happened to me.

There is no easy solution. They are not about to take plastic.

Didn't Want To Go Green

I just bought a 200 square foot roll of cling wrap. It should last me about five months.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize I bought their "holiday edition". The stuff is green and looks ridiculous. I like the clear one. Why did they do this?
It's my fault because I should have looked closer at it.

Black Ink

I never thought my print job would die, but it did tonight. I had all I could do to print three sheets.
It seems like the black ink cartridge is totally empty.  I was able to squeeze three more pages.
Time to go to Staples for a new cartridge.

No Rush To Get There

Uber and Lyft have greatly impacted the taxi cab industry, but who ever thought it would effect ambulance rides?
A recent study of communities where ride sharing operates showed that transportation to the hospital by ambulance has decreased by 7%.
This is a hard number to interpret. It sounds like some of the trips to the ER were not that urgent. We have always been told that minutes matter during an emergency.

How Was The Party?

I plan to stop by at a Christmas party tonight in Cambridge. It's at a comedy club where I have performed before. I attended last year, but it was rather crowded.

I'll see what happens this year. It's always nice to see everyone, but it can get crowded real fast.

Fair People

I don't attend craft fairs, but a lot of other people do. This time of year provides shoppers with many interesting gifts to buy.

It's never good if the sellers end the day with a lot of inventory. There is always packing and moving that needs to be done.

There is no guarantee of sales. It can be a tough way to make money. People who do it seem to have a passion.

No Apples Today

I got an email today stating that the security on my Apple computer had been compromised. I never opened the complete message because it looked so suspicious.
Apparently, they think I have an Apple. How did I ever get this? This is not the first time for this message.

Won't Be Seeing The Movie

Tonight is the premiere of the eighth Star Wars movie, but I have no plans to see it.

The movie series is a financial blockbuster since the first one came out in the 1970's.

I have never been a big fan of science fiction. The movies never did much for me. I saw part of the first one, but turned it off after about 30 minutes.

All In The Cards

People don't send holiday cards like in years past. It use to be a big thing to send and get them.
Social media has destroyed all that. It seems so impersonal when you see a post on Facebook from someone who says if you want to receive a card, send them a direct message.
I understand their point, but what is the sense of sending cards if you need to ask people?

The Shattered Bowl

I have dropped dishes and drinking glasses on the floor. Sometimes they break, but other times they don't. You never know the outcome.
I dropped a cereal bowl yesterday. It made a loud bang when it hit the floor. I was shocked to see how it completely shattered into so many small pieces. There was nothing left to it.

Fake Bike Lanes

The proliferation of bike lanes in cities has presented many challenges for riders and cars. I see cyclists all over the place when I  drive in some parts of Boston and Cambridge.
Bike lanes should only be set aside after careful planning. A recent news story mentioned a rider who took it upon himself to paint a line on a bridge in Boston's Seaport District.
The story was a bit amusing, but people can't be taking it upon themselves to declare where a bike lane will go.
This is just another example of the difficulty in keeping everyone happy about this issue.

Drain Game

For the last month, my bath tub has drained very slowly. I poured several bottles of Draino into it, but to no avail.  Whenever I showered, I ended up in ankle deep water.
It changed so much today. I'm not sure what happened, but my tub drained and is working very well. I will never understand how this happened.

The First Snow of Dec 2017

We saw the first snow of the season today. It's not winter yet, but here we are with at least four inches of snow.
Plows were out there earning at least four hours of pay.
It might get a lot worse than this over the next few months. Nobody knows how much snow we might get.

Cheap TV Watching

According to a sticker on my new HD television, it costs $14 annually for electricity, based on five hours of viewing.
I never turn it on until at least 5pm. If I'm home in the evening, I don't always have it on.
It would be interesting to monitor the duration of my daily use. The bigger cost is my monthly COMCAST cable bill of $115.

They Want Rain

I cannot believe the wild fires in California. So many homes have been burned to the ground. There is no relief in sight.
Meanwhile, people in New England are concerned whether they might get up to five inches of snow on Saturday.
It's a bunch of nonsense. The local news channels made it their lead story.
I get embarrassed by this. People are losing their home in California to wild fire. We don't have that here.  Snow is nothing.

Say Something Positive

It's a different experience for kids in grammar school today. Things were done very differently when I was growing up. It was unheard of to celebrate anyone's birthday or to bring food and snacks to school.
I saw a Facebook posting where the mother showed a picture of her son with a sheet of paper with all of the comments the children had written about him on his birthday. They wrote one positive word.
This works well with really young kids. I can only imagine what they will write when they get older.
It seems like a nice thing to do when kids are that age.

Olympic Nonsense

It was just announced that Russia has been banned from the Winter Olympic Games because of doping issues with athletes. Several of them will be allowed to compete, but not under the Russian flag.
This doesn't even register with me. I'm not a big fan of the Olympics. It's an over-hyped event and a financial disaster for any country and locale that agrees to host the Games.
I still can't believe that a group wanted Boston to be the host of the Summer Games in 2024. Thankfully, that idea eventually died.

Those Problems

I was planning to write to my website last night, but had a major problem accessing the Internet.
I'm not sure what happened. I ran a Norton Virus Scan that took about 45 minutes before it finished.
Will this solve last night's issue?

The Exploding Phone

The evening news had a story about an iPhone 6 which exploded while the user was texting. It was caught on video.
The phone was destroyed after the explosion which caused a big flash with smoke. Apple plans to examine the phone. How did this happen?
We all use our phones with the expectation that nothing bad will occur.

End Of 2017

We made it to the last month of 2017 and are moving forward to 2018. The year went by so fast.
Three weeks ago tonight, I was getting ready to run the New York City Marathon and had no idea how it would end.
Three weeks from tonight is Christmas weekend. Another week after that is 2018.
